COX TECHNIC FLEXION
Cox Technic Flexion Distraction and Decompression, named after its creator, James M. Cox, DC DACBR, is a gentle and non-force chiropractic method used for spinal adjustments. Dr. Jeffrey Farnham D.C. utilizes this highly effective spinal manipulation and decompression technique, which blends principles from both chiropractic and osteopathic practices. This combined approach offers a non-surgical alternative to more invasive procedures, especially beneficial for those suffering from neck, arm, back, and leg pain. In fact, it is particularly useful for the majority of patients those who account for 95% of healthcare costs related to back pain such as individuals with disc herniations and spinal stenosis. The effectiveness of Cox Technic for these more complex conditions also makes it suitable for treating less severe cases of back and neck pain as well.
How It Helps
Dr. Farnham uses the specially designed Cox 8 Table to perform gentle, hands-on flexion-distraction and spinal decompression.
The main effects of this form of spinal manipulation include:
Increasing the height of the intervertebral discs, which helps…
Reducing pressure within the disc, which supports the healing of disc herniations, and…
Alleviating pressure on pinched nerves by increasing the size of the intervertebral foramen (the spaces where nerves exit the spine), and…
Restoring the free movement of the vertebrae (improving range of motion)
Conditions
Dr. Farnham focuses on delivering evidence-based care tailored to each patient. Cox Technic is appropriate for several common conditions, including:
- Disc herniations
- Low back pain and leg pain
- Neck and arm pain
- Radiculopathy
- Osteoarthritis of the spine
- Degenerative disc disease
- Facet syndrome
- Spinal stenosis
- Spondylolisthesis
- post-surgical continued pain (pain after back surgery) aka FBSS (failed back surgical syndrome)
- Whiplash-type injuries
- Headaches
- Scoliosis (not to cure but to maintain mobility of the curve)
- Patients unable to tolerate vigorous adjustments
And many other conditions
*Please note that this list is not comprehensive and does not exclude other possible conditions. Not every patient with these conditions may benefit, as other factors can influence treatment outcomes. These are general conditions, and each patient will be carefully examined by Dr. Farnham to determine the most suitable course of treatment in consultation with the patient and/or their healthcare provider.
How Long Will It Take?
Every patient is unique, and treatment is always customized to meet individual needs.
To help you achieve pain relief as quickly as possible while maximizing healing, Cox Technic follows a “Rule of 50%.”
In general, once your pain decreases by 50% whether subjectively or objectively your treatment frequency will be reduced by 50%.
You will also receive home exercises on your first day of treatment, which will be gradually increased as you become more comfortable. The goal is to get you back to pain-free living and help you regain your quality of life as efficiently as possible.
If you do not see a 50% improvement within 30 days of treatment, you may be referred for additional diagnostic testing or consultations with a specialist.
Some spinal conditions are permanent, and total pain relief may not be achievable. In such cases, a realistic approach is to focus on “Control, Not Cure.” For example, a transitional segment is a structural feature and cannot be cured. In these situations, Dr. Farnham will aim to maximize your pain relief, help you understand your condition and identify what triggers your pain, empowering you to manage your symptoms effectively. Knowledge is a powerful tool!
Dr. Farnham conducts a thorough physical examination to make an accurate diagnosis. Based on this, a personalized course of care will be recommended. The doctor-patient relationship is a partnership, and it is essential that both parties agree on the treatment goals and are committed to achieving them together.
